A Phone Directory Education
When I was in first grade, my teacher gave us the interesting assignment to find everyone in our class’ home phone number in the phone book. It sounds like a weird assignment now, but it really did have multiple purposes. It taught us to learn how to use directories, which is an important part of business, education and socializing ourselves. It also taught us many other things as well.
First, we had all recently learned to read, so it was good practice reading. Second, our teacher wanted to make a class directory for his parents. It also gave us the opportunity to read names of people and street names, which many times are not spelled phonetically. It was an interesting lesson. The next day we all talked about interesting things that we found in the phone book. It was amazing how many kids found things that they though were interesting in the simple directory of phone numbers and addresses. We all noticed that there were a lot of Browns, which made it incredibly difficult to find Kevin Brown’s phone number. We also learned that Riley and Emma lived on the same street. It’s a bit surprising that I remember this certain activity, but it proves that it was fun and interesting!
