My dog Jack is entering his final years. He is a Boxer, who magically one day decided to mellow out. We chose that breed of dog because they are loyal and loving, and highly energetic. If someone is in the market for a dog, they should first consider the amount of energy they are willing to deal with. Animals can provide wonderful companionship, but only if you choose the right kind of animal for you. If you aren’t a dog person, think about a cat, a rabbit, fish, and even a snake. Before you make a final decision, talk to an animal expert at a pet store or to your local veterinarian about what needs the animal will have and if you’re ready to meet those needs.
Many dogs require that someone play with them whenever they are in the room. They want to be walked and paid attention to all day. Although this is typical of puppies, it doesn’t wear off for every dog. Our first two boxers were energetic throughout their whole lives and never really slowed down, they never chilled out. Jack luckily has, but if looking for a very relaxed dog that doesn’t require a lot of energy to own, don’t choose a Boxer.
